The 5 Best Ever Cricketers from New Zealand

New Zealand as a cricketing nation has never really challenged the world great teams on a consistent basis. Australia, West Indies, England, India and Pakistan have scooped up the major prizes in world cricket. However, New Zealand has produced some of the best players that have ever played cricket, and now we celebrate them.

Sir Richard Hadlee

Richard Hadlee was one of the greatest cricketers ever! From any nation or time. His name is consistently on best-of lists of world cricketers, and he would definitely feature in an all time World Cricket Team.

He was a true all-rounder who was also a terrific bowler over the seventeen years he played competitive cricket. He was a true pace bowler, who not only had blistering speed his bowling was also very accurate. In eighty-six Test matches he took four hundred and thirty-one wickets which was a record at the time.

He even took nine wickets against the arch enemy Australia for just fifty-two runs. The Test in Brisbane in 1985 is still the sixth best bowling spell in cricket history. Hadlee was just as successful in the one-day game, finishing his career taking a five wicket haul against England.

Daniel Vettori

A modern day spinner, Daniel Vettori started his Test career in 1997. His left arm spin bowling was as effective taking wickets than any of his contemporaries during his eighteen years of professional cricket. His record speaks for itself taking three hundred and sixty-two wickets in one hundred and twelve Tests. In the one-day format, Vettori is New Zealand’s highest ever wicket taker, and in this form of the game he was also a formidable batsman, which makes him a true all-rounder.

Martin Crowe

Martin Crowe was possibly New Zealand’s best ever captain and a terrific batsman. His cricket style was highly innovative, and he took this into the way he elegantly batted. It was his footwork that made him so devastating with a bat, and he had the capacity to make tough shots look simple. During his Test career he managed to notch up five thousand, four hundred and forty-four runs, which puts him in fourth place in New Zealand cricket history.

Stephen Fleming

The best batsman that New Zealand has ever produced must be Stephen Fleming. He was a vital part of the Black Caps team, and at twenty three he became the youngest player to captain his country.

He was responsible for leading New Zealand to their only international silverware, when they won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2000. At the crease he was a very elegant player who had perfect technique and his best two shots were the cover drive, and the straight drive.

Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum must go down as one of the most aggressive and devastating batsmen that played for New Zealand. He played for the Black Caps for fourteen years and was heavily responsible for guiding the team to their first ever World Cup final in 2015. In his last Test match, he went out with a bang scoring the fastest century ever, off just fifty four balls. With such great players it is amazing that New Zealand have not achieved higher things in Test and ODI cricket, but these five great players will remain in world cricket history.
